Marvel Renames “Spider-Man: Freshman Year” Disney+ Series
One of the many new animated series announced at the Disney+ Day in 2021 was a brand new animated series called “Spider-Man: Freshman Year”, which follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. The show is being written and executive-produced by Jeff Trammel.
During a special screening event for the upcoming second season of “What If?”, it was announced that the show had been renamed to “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”. A sizzle reel was shown to those in attendance, which previewed some of the upcoming show.
The animation for “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” will be produced by Japanese digital animation studio, Polygon Pictures, who have previously worked on Apple’s “Stillwater”, along with “Ajin”, “Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei”, “Mech Cadets”, and “Transformers: War for Cybertron”.
Disney already has lots of faith in the upcoming series as last summer, at the San Diego Comic-Con, that the show had already been picked up for a second season called, “Spider-Man: Sophomore Year”, though it’s likely this will also be renamed or just become a second season of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”.
Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad idea for Marvel to rename the series, since, globally, using US high school terminology might not work as well as a more generic name.
“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is scheduled to arrive on Disney+ in 2024, though it’s likely to be at the end of the year since Marvel Studios is also releasing some other animated shows, including “X-Men 97” and “Eyes Of Wakanda”.
