Filming is currently underway in Vancouver, Canada, on the next installment in the “Tron” franchise, called “Tron: Ares”, which is slated for release in cinemas on October 10th 2025, before arriving on Disney+ in early 2026.

“Tron: Ares” follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

The new film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

Joachim Rønning is going to be directing the movie and Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen are serving as executive producer.

This past weekend, Cameron Monaghan took part in a panel at the Calgary Expo, where he spoke with Collider‘s Maggie Lovitt, where he shared some updates on the upcoming third film:

“I think this one, in a very similar way, is going to really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective. I would sometimes even come in on days I wasn’t working, because that set was really amazing. A lot of the practical sets were pretty phenomenal, and I would love to go look at those as well.”

Cameron also shared some thoughts on how the previous movies have held up, especially with the use of groundbreaking technology.

“And that’s a movie that, I think, has now grown a cult fandom, in a similar way that the original Tron did as well, where people thought it was very technologically cool but it’s continued to grow. Tron Legacy, I just saw projected in 35MM at the New Beverly last year, and it really holds up, and has that amazing soundtrack by Daft Punk. So I like that those movies have a number of years of separation between them. They don’t come out very often, and every time they do, they show a new era of technology and filmmaking.”

The previous “Tron” movies, along with the animated series are available to stream now on Disney+.
