Disney has been diving into its huge back catalog of franchises for content for Disney+ for a while and one project that was on the table, before being cancelled, was a series based on Tron.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a series based on the classic 80’s movie, had been in development for the new streaming service, by John Ridley, who is the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind 12 Years A Slave.  He has a “Overall” ABC Studios deal, so pushed the idea to Disney, but the project fell apart before it was greenlit by the company as it was considered too expensive for the streaming platform.

Since the project was still in the early stages, it was never officially announced.

Tron has seen many sequels over the years, including Tron Legacy and an animated series, called Tron: Uprising, which are all available on Disney+.   And Disney has been working on third movie, called Tron: Ascension, which is going to see computer characters leaving the grid and coming into the real world.  However this film has been on hold for a while, but Disney is currently constructing a Tron themed roller-coaster at the Magic Kingdom, which is based on the one built at Shanghai Disney Resort (which I’ve ridden on a number of times, because its brilliant), so the franchise is still being used at the company.

Would you have liked to see a Disney+ Tron series?
