20th Century Studios Developing “The Caves Of Steel”
20th Century Studios is developing a brand new film that is based on Isaac Asimov’s 1954 sci-fi novel “The Caves of Steel”.
The book tells the story set a millennium into the future, where two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov’s Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer. The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start. Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw. Worst of all was that the “R” stood for robot–and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!
This upcoming film will be directed by John Ridley, who previously won an Oscar for writing the hit movie 12 Years a Slave. He has also worked on several other well-known shows, including “Godfather of Harlem,” “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” and “American Crime.”
Cheo Hodari Coker, who previously worked on the Marvel “Luke Cage” series, along with “Ray Donovan” and “Almost Human,” is also working on the script for the new film.
This isn’t going to be the first adaptation of “The Caves of Steel”, as the BBC made a series on the book back in the 1960s, so it’s been long enough that a remake makes sense.
According to Deadline, John Ridley may also take inspiration from “The Caves of Steel” sequels, “The Naked Sun” and “The Robots of Dawn”.
With the project still in development, no release details have been announced and it’s likely that this film will be released theatrically before being released on Hulu and Disney+, as the studio now prioritises theatrical releases.
