Marvel Reveals “Black Panther 3” At SDCC

During Marvel’s Studios’ showcase presentation at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige confirmed details on the upcoming third instalment in the iconic “Black Panther” franchise.

The Academy Award-winning director, Ryan Coogler, who directed the previous “Black Panther” movies, took to the stage to confirm that he is returning to direct “Black Panther 3”.  He also revealed that, for the first time with a Marvel film, it will be shot entirely on larger-format celluloid film.

Letitia Wright and Winston Duke also took to the stage to confirm they will be returning as Shuri and M’Baku; they also revealed that the film will arrive in theatres on December 15th, 2028.  This means we should expect to see “Black Panther 3” arrive on Disney+ in the first half of 2029.    Both Shuri and M’Baku are also going to be returning to our screens in “Avengers: Doomsday” later this year.

There was also one final surprise, where Kevin Fiege introduced David Jonsson to the stage to reveal that he will be playing the role of Toussaint, aka T’Challa II.  David has previously starred in “Alien: Romulus”.

David will be playing the role of T’Challa’s son, T’Challa, who was introduced in the second film, which had to deal with the sad passing of Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa in the Marvel films. 

While we wait for the next instalment in the franchise, you can watch both “Black Panther” and “Black Panther 2”, along with the exclusive animated series, “Eyes Of Wakanda” on Disney+ now.

Roger’s Take:  It’ll be interesting to see how they handle the age situation of David Jonsson, since he’s actually the same age as Letitia Wright, though with a bit of a time jump, and generally, it’s not uncommon for actors to play characters much younger than them.   I think Marvel is handling this situation by remaining sensitive to the passing of Chadwick Boseman while also acknowledging that the Black Panther is too important to let go of.
