Disney+ Adds “The Big Bang Theory” In The UK
This morning, when I fired up Disney+ to see what had been added onto the streaming service in the United Kingdom today (since we never know exactly what will be added in advance), there was a bit of a surprise new addition. Every episode of the hit comedy series, “The Big Bang Theory”, is now available on Disney+ in the United Kingdom.
The series follows Mensa-fied best friends and roommates Leonard and Sheldon, physicists who work at the California Institute of Technology, may be able to tell everybody more than they want to know about quantum physics but getting through most basic social situations, especially ones involving women, totally baffles them. How lucky, then waitress but aspiring actress Penny moves in next door. Frequently seen hanging out with Leonard and Sheldon are friends and fellow Caltech scientists Wolowitz and Koothrappali. Will worlds collide? Does Einstein theorize in the woods?
Throughout its impressive run, The Big Bang Theory was nominated for an astonishing 55 Emmy Awards and won 10. The series was also honored with a Television Critics Association Award, and People’s Choice and Teen Choice Awards and was recognized by the AFI and Humanitas organizations. The Big Bang Theory premiered in 2007 and aired 279 episodes spanning 12 seasons.
“The Big Bang Theory” was produced by Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions. Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady were co-creators/executive producers/head writers. Steven Molaro, Lee Aronsohn, Eric Kaplan, Maria Ferrari, Dave Goetsch, and Steve Holland have also served as executive producers on the series.
Recently, Warner Brothers Discovery has been licensing more of its library content to other streaming services and linear channels in an effort to increase revenue, as the company is in a lot of debt. It also seems likely we are going to see more films and shows coming from Warner Brothers Discovery heading to Disney+ and Hulu in the future since we’ve recently seen Disney announce the hit series, “Gilmore Girls”, which will be coming to Disney+ in Canada in February. Plus, we’ve seen Disney team up with Warner Brothers Discovery for a bundle of Max with Disney+ & Hulu in the United States.
Disney+ in the United Kingdom has generally always had licensed content from other companies, usually shows and films made within Europe, to help the streaming service hit its European quota, which requires a certain amount of content to be created within Europe.
The addition of “The Big Bang Theory” opens Disney+ up to popular bingeable shows that will help boost viewership and retention, which also helps with additional revenue from advertising. It’s also worth noting that “The Big Bang Theory” is readily available on other streaming services in the UK including Netflix, Amazon Prime and Channel 4.
