Disney is currently developing a new movie for Disney+ called “Young Woman and the Sea”, which is based on the book by Glenn Stout.  The film will tell the story of the darling journey of Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, who was the first woman to swim across the English channel in 1926.

Negotiations are currently underway with Daisy Ridley to take on the title role.  Daisy previously starred in Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy as Rey.

Gertrude Ederle won a gold medal in the 400 meter freestyle relay and bronze medals in the 100 meter and 400 meter freestyle races in the 1924 Paris Olympics. The next year she conceived of the idea of swimming the English Channel and made her first try, however the sea was rough and she didn’t succeed in her 1925 attempt.  The following year she became the first woman to swim the English Channel. Her time of 14 hours, 31 minutes for the 35-mile (56K) distance broke the previous record held by a man, bettering it by almost two hours, and it stood for 35 years as the woman’s record.

The film will be directed by Joaquim Rønning, who previously directed “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and also co-directed “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”.  With Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman producing the film.

Originally this film was being made by Paramount, but now Disney will be making it for Disney+.

Production is due to being in the second-quarter of 2021.
