20th Century Studios & H.E.R Developing New Majorettes Movie
20th Century Studios is developing a brand new, untitled movie inspired by the Majorettes, starring actress and musician Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, aka H.E.R.
The new untitled dance movie will follow an introverted ballet dancer from L.A. who defies her parents by putting her thriving dance career on hold to go to college. There, she joins her HBCU’s struggling majorette team and attempts to overcome culture shock, her stuffy dance background, and fierce rivals to help return the team to its former glory.
The intent of the movie is to make a funny, joyous celebration of authentic HBCU life told through the point of view of a majorette who, through experiencing HBCU life for the first time, will start to tap into who she really is.
Majorette is a mixture of jazz, ballet, and hip-hop. The dancers are known for their bright outfits, kick lines, tricks, and song selections.
H.E.R. recently starred in the Warner Brothers movie, “The Color Purple”, and will develop, produce, and act in the project. She has won five Grammys for her music and an Oscar for her song “Fight for You” from the civil rights drama Judas and the Black Messiah.
According to THR, the upcoming film will be written by Emmy nominee Lauren Ashley Smith, who has previously worked on “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and “Between Two Ferns: The Movie.”
Carla Gardini and Mara Jacobs will also produce the film, with Rashonda Joplin overseeing the project for 20th Century Studios. Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders, who previously worked with H.E.R. on “The Color Purple,” will also be involved.
No other details on the film have been revealed, such as when production is set to begin, when it’s expected to be released, or whether it will be a theatrical or Disney+ release.
