What’s Left Disney+ In The US | February 2020
The first of the month doesn’t just mean we get some new content arriving on Disney+, it also is a day when some content is removed in the United States. Last month we saw a number of movies removed, including Home Alone and The Sandlot.
And this month, it looks like the classic animated movie, The Sword in the Stone has been removed and once again its 20th Century Studios movies getting hit harder as Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer and Garfield: The Movie, were both removed. This marks the second Garfield movie to be removed, as Garfield: Tale of Two Kitties was removed in December to go to Starz.
UPDATE * Alice Through The Looking Glass has been removed as well.
UPDATE* Sword in the Stone has been re-added to Disney+
It does seem like 20th Century Studios movies are being effected more often, since there is an existing streaming deal in place with Starz, which is where Garfield will be moving to on February 14th.
Last year it was revealed that Disney made a deal with Starz for access to some movies, so it once again comes down to contracts, since Disney’s The Muppets: Most Wanted is also available on Starz from today, but wasn’t removed from Disney+ . Generally, most of the removals on Disney+ are only affecting US subscribers, since many of those countries have contracts with different streaming rights.
The good news is that Disney did re-add 20th Century Studios, The Sandlot, today, so once any existing contracts expire, these titles will be added back onto Disney+. And it’s not the first title to return to Disney+ after being removed, such as Never Been Kissed and Avalon High, since sometimes if there is an issue with the movie or show, they are removed temporarily.
One of the biggest issues with titles being removed, is Disney isn’t informing its subscribers of these changes, either by announcing it via social media or in their “NEXT” releases, like Hulu does already. And the information isn’t being given within the app to state when a title is going to be removed, which is something else Hulu does. Personally I still believe Disney needs to get a better handle on this situation, similar to how they’ve put messages up about upcoming titles like Black Panther or Mary Poppins Returns, saying when they will be available on Disney+.
Unfortunately, once again, existing contracts seem to be the big issue that is hitting Disney+. And hopefully these titles will be put back on Disney+ in the US soon.
Did you notice any other titles removed from Disney+ this month?
I wanna know why you guys put bridge to terabithia it's a diseny movie so why not add It can you guys plz think about adding it it's one of my favorites
I still hope to see Marsupilami on there, As well as The Muppet Show.
Why is Disney removing The Sword In the Stone when it is their property ? I don't understand.
Existing contracts made with other streaming companies before Disney+ was created... it'll cost them a fortune to buy out those contracts or huge legal bills if they didn't
They pulled Alice through the looking glass
Thanks for that, I'll add it
