Marvel’s “Nova” Movie Goes Into Early Development
It’s been over six years since it was first revealed that Marvel Studios was developing a new project for Disney+ featuring the superhero, Nova, with it being revealed in 2024, that Sabir Pirzada was going to write it.
In that time, we’ve had a couple of updates on the project, where it was potentially a Special Presentation or a Disney+ series, with Ed Bernero coming aboard the project as the showrunner and writer in late 2024.
However, the “Nova” project was put on hold in 2025, as Disney drastically reduced the output to its streaming service to make it more profitable, along with scaling back how many Marvel projects get released each year.
Nova, aka Richard Rider, is a member of the Nova Corps until the Annihilation Wave destroys them all, leaving him imbued with their combined power. Guided by the super-intelligent Worldmind computer, Richard Rider wages a one-man battle for justice as Nova.
Now, it’s been reported by Deadline that Michael Waldron has joined the project to write and direct the project, should it go forward, but now it will be a movie. This is because Waldron’s WGA card was leaked, revealing that Waldron was working on the project.
Michael has recently worked with Disney on the “Chad Powers” Hulu series; he has also worked on multiple Marvel projects, including “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” and the “Loki” Disney+ series.
Marvel hasn’t officially announced the “Nova” project, though it could potentially be one of the reveals made at their presentations at San Diego Comic-Con or D23: The Ultimate Fan Event later this summer. As long as Marvel feels confident it’s actually going to happen, as we don’t want another “Blade” situation after its initial reveal back at the SDCC in 2019.
Roger’s Take: There’s little doubt that Marvel wants to bring Nova to our screens, as they’ve been working on it for over five years, but with the Disney+ production slowdown, it made sense to hold it back until after the multiverse era is over. I also think a movie will be better than a Disney+ series, since they can throw a higher budget at it, as a show set in space, might be too expensive to do now on the tighter budgets. Though, as with anything in early development and the fact that we’ve seen so many “Nova” projects cancelled, it might not go anywhere.
