Back in 2021, Marvel Studios released “Black Widow” in cinemas, and it went down well with fans, but as expected, the box office results for the movie were considerably down on previous instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to restrictions at cinemas and people not feeling comfortable about being around other people, Disney also made the decision to release many of its major new titles on Disney+ Premier Access, so people could watch from home, but for a higher price.

But the release on Disney+ Premier Access was a major issue for Hollywood, as Scarlett Johansson sued Disney for the move since her contract stated that the “Avengers” spinoff had to be released exclusively in theatres.

Disney hit back at the lawsuit, calling out Johansson for her “callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic” and also revealing that she had been paid $20 million for making the film.

Within a couple of months, the lawsuit was dropped as the two parties came to an agreement, which is estimated to have been a payout of over $40 million.  And shortly afterwards, it was revealed that Scarlett Johansson was working on some other projects with Disney, which are rumoured to be a “Tower Of Terror” film and another Marvel project.

We’ve not heard much about either of these projects for a while; however, according to Marvel Studios creative executive Courtney Baker’s LinkedIn page, she served as an executive on the upcoming untitled Scarlett Johansson series for Disney+.

Courtney Baker has previously worked on “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Holiday Special” for Disney+, in addition to “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 3” and many other shows and films at Marvel.

It’s still unknown what this Disney+ series is going to be. Could we see Scarlett Johansson return as Black Widow?  Maybe as a prequel series to the events of Endgame, or is it set after Secret Wars, and they somehow bring her back?   Could this project also be an animated series for Disney+?  Or could it possibly be a Yelena spin-off?

Last summer, during as Asteroid City press junket gave a small update on the untitled project, but it was impacted by the strikes.

“It is still happening, [but] not currently because nothing is happening right now. We’re all sort of in this holding pattern as we wait out the writers’ strike and potentially our own guild strike, and so on and so forth.”

With Disney drastically pulling back on how many Marvel films and shows it creates, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see this project pushed further down the line, but maybe we will get an update on the future plans at this year’s D23 event in August?
