“Power Rangers” Live-Action Series In The Works For Disney+
After the success of “Percy Jackson And The Olympians” on Disney+, the show’s showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are now turning their attention to another well-established franchise, “The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers”.
According to the Wrap, the pair are currently in talks to write, showrun and produce a live-action “Power Rangers” series for Disney+. The franchise is currently owned by Hasbro, and they will be producing the series with 20th Television.
The Power Rangers debuted in the 1990s. The initial show was inspired by a Japanese children’s show, Super Sentai. The show is about a team of teenagers who are recruited to save Angel Grove from the evil witch Rita Repulsa and later Lord Zedd, Emperor of all he sees, and their horde of monsters. The teenagers have martial arts skills and massive mech suits that can morph together into gigantic mech warriors.
Since the initial show debuted, the franchise has been the subject of many different follow-ups and reboots, as well as multiple theatrically released films, some of which were distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Ironically, Disney has a long-established history with the “Power Rangers” franchise, as they owned it when Disney purchased Fox Family Worldwide, resulting in Disney releasing multiple seasons, including “Power Rangers Wild Force” and “Power Rangers RPM”. However, Disney sold the “Power Rangers” to Saban in 2010,
Hasbro acquired the rights to the “Power Rangers” in 2018 and has recently changed its strategy to create shows and films based on its franchises like “Dungeons & Dragons”, “Magic The Gathering”, and “Transformers”.
Roger’s Take: As someone who enjoyed watching the original show back in the 90s, I think bringing back the “Power Rangers” for a brand-new series is exactly what Disney+ needs. It is a show that appeals to that target demographic, and no doubt, Hasbro also needs the show to be successful in selling a bunch of toys to a new generation. The franchise is established enough to have a long-standing formula that has worked in the past and can be tweaked for today’s kids.
