ABC Orders New “Grey’s Anatomy” Spin-Off Series
One of the most popular shows not just on Disney+ or Hulu, but across every streaming service is the hit hospital drama, “Grey’s Anatomy”, which has run for 22 seasons.
In that time, the show has seen many successful spin-offs, including “Station 19”, which ran for seven seasons and “Private Practice”, which ran for six seasons.
Now we can add another spin-off to the list, as Deadline has revealed that ABC has given a straight-to-series order to a new untitled medical drama, which is scheduled to arrive on ABC/Hulu/Disney+ during the 2027 midseason.
Very little information about the new series has been revealed, but it will be co-created, written, and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, who created “Grey’s Anatomy”, along with the show’s current showrunner/executive producer Meg Marinis, from Shondaland and 20th Television. They will both be executive producers, along with Betsy Beers.
Ellen Pompeo, who plays the title character, Meredith Grey, in the main series, will also be an executive producer on the spin-off.
The description for the show states that it is an edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical centre, the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.
However, unlike the last two spin-offs, the new show won’t be spinning off a series regular character from “Grey’s Anatomy”, though that could still change, or at least feature some cameos, such as Catherine Fox, to help bring audiences over to the new show.
Meg Marinis, said in a statement regarding the new show:
“I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas. I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”
While Shonda Rhimes has an overall deal with Netflix, since it’s a spin-off of an existing show, she can still be involved and working on this project, similar to how Ryan Murphy was able to continue to work on his “American Stories” shows while working at Netflix.
No other details, such as how many episodes the new show will consist of, nor when it might be airing on ABC, though its expected to follow a similar pattern to other connected shows, like “The Rookie” or “9-1-1”, in airing them back to back, to keep fans engaged.
Roger’s Take: This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, “Grey’s Anatomy” is a ratings juggernaut, both on linear and streaming services. A spin-off is much more likely to catch on with viewers than launching an all-new original show, though moving the location to Texas will likely help give the new show a unique feel. As a fan of “Grey’s Anatomy” for over twenty years, I’m more than happy to give the spin-off a look when it arrives in 2027.
