One of the first major announcements Bob Iger made when returning to Disney as the new CEO, was to announce a third “Frozen” film was in development at Walt Disney Animation. With many of the recent films like “Strange World”, “Encanto”, and “Lightyear” failing to ignite at the box office, Bob Iger was quick to turn the franchise tap back on with more films with established characters.

This week, at the London Film Festival, Walt Disney Animations Chief Creative Officer, Jennifer Lee, spoke at a keynote event and provided a very small update on the production of “Frozen 3”, saying:

“All I’ll say is that every morning last week they carved out space for me to work with the creative team on it, and I am blown away and I am so excited.  I don’t know what I’m doing on it yet — I’m not doing nothing — except doing what I do now, which is we work on every project as as team and I’m in there with creative. But with ‘Frozen,’ just a little bit more.”

Jennifer Lee was the screenwriter and director of the two previous “Frozen” movie, so it would seem likely that she isn’t going to be directing the third instalment since she now runs the animation division.  But it does sound like she’s going to be heavily involved in the creation of the new film, which would make sense since the original film was released ten years ago and has become a cultural phenomenon, with a smash hit sequel film, that’s one of the biggest animated films of all time, in addition to some animated shorts and theme park attractions around the world.

In the original film, Anna sets out on a journey with an iceman, Kristoff, and his reindeer, Sven, in order to find her sister, Elsa, who has the power to convert any object or person into ice.  While in the sequel, Queen Elsa starts hearing a mysterious melodic voice calling to her. Unsettled, she answers it and that awakens the elemental spirits that lead her to a quest to restore an old injustice.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get any more information about the third film, such as what it’s about, or when it might be released.  But it does sound like work on the new film is progressing well.

While we wait for “Frozen 3”, you can enjoy the first two films, plus the animated shorts on Disney+ now.
