In September, Disney’s “Frozen” musical will be coming to an end at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane after three years.

The show adapts the classic animated film of the same name and follows Elsa, who is gifted with ice-manipulating powers, and her relationship with her sister Anna as they try to run a nation.

The West End version stars Samantha Barks as Elsa, Laura Dawkes as Anna, Jammy Kasongo as Kristoff, Craig Gallivan as Olaf, Oliver Ormson as Hans, Richard Frame as Duke of Weselton, with Mikayla Jade and Ashley Birchal alternating the role of Sven.

According to the Theatre Fan, Disney has either recently filmed or is planning to film a pro-shot of the West-End production, which is set to be released on Disney+ at a later date.

This version has been directed by Michael Grandage with choreography by Rob Ashford, set and costume design by Christopher Oram, lighting design by Neil Austin, sound design by Peter Hylenski, video design by Finn Ross, puppet design by Michael Curry and musical supervision and arrangements by Stephen Oremus.

The show has had a difficult life cycle due to the impact that the pandemic had on theatres, especially in the UK, where the opening of the show was delayed until 2021. And Disney never restarted the Broadway musical version after the pandemic, though it has taken the show on the road. After the show opened on Broadway in 2018, it was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has also run in many other countries, including Australia, Germany, Japan, and Norway.

With the show coming to a close in London, releasing a filmed version of the musical on Disney+ after it’s wrapped up wouldn’t impact on ticket sales, though Disney may have wanted a pro-shot version of the musical for other reasons.

It should be noted that there were reports that Disney filmed a pro-shot version of “Aladdin” before it finished its run on the West End, and that was also reported to be getting a Disney+ release, but that’s never happened. But recently, a pro-shot version of “Beauty and the Beast” was added to Disney+ in Australia.
