With both “Frozen” films being huge blockbuster hits and with Disney wanting to recapture some of the magic, earlier this year, during Bob Iger’s first quarterly financial call since returning as the CEO of the Walt Disney Company, he announced a third “Frozen” film was in development from the Walt Disney Animation Studio.

The first “Frozen” film was released ten years ago and told the story of Snow Queen Elsa, who inadvertently uses her power to make her kingdom experience constant wintriness. Her sister Anna teams up with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer to demolish the snowy spell.

This was followed up in 2019 with “Frozen 2”, which was set three years after her coronation and sees Elsa celebrating Autumn, she hears a mysterious voice. She follows that voice along with Anna and their friends as they are forced to uncover the truth.

Last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared on Good Morning America to promote the opening of the World of Frozen-themed land at Hong Kong Disneyland and announced that a fourth “Frozen” film is also possibly in development.

“Well, I’ll give you a little surprise there, Michael. ‘Frozen 3’ is in the works and there might be a ‘Frozen 4’ in the works too.  But I don’t have much to say about those films right now.  But Jenn Lee, who created ‘Frozen,’ the original ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen II,’ is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation on not one but actually two stories.”

Jennifer Lee, the Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation and the writer/executive producer of “Wish” and “Frozen” was asked during an interview for D23 if she could reveal more about the upcoming “Frozen” films, to which she replied:

Only what we have already shared, which is the team is hard at work, we are deeply excited about the story we are shaping together, and it’s so epic it may not fit into just one film.

While we wait for the new “Frozen” films, you can watch the first two movies, along with a selection of shorts featuring Anna, Elsa and Olaf, on Disney+ now.
