The third and final season of Jessica Jones, is now available on Netflix and is the final Marvel series on Netflix, with other series being cancelled including Daredevil, Iron Fist, The Punisher, Luke Cage and the Defenders.

This has led to many speculating on when these characters will return, either on Disney+ or on Hulu.  While Disney+ is getting many new Marvel shows including Loki, Wandavision, Hawkeye and Falcon & Winter Soldier, Hulu is also getting new Marvel shows such as Ghost Rider and Helstrom.

However there are some legal issues why characters like Jessica Jones and Daredevil won’t be returning to our screens for a while, since the existing contract stops Marvel developing shows with those characters for 2 years.  However “The Punisher” isn’t included in that deal.

But this might not be the only reason, as recently Jessica Jones actress Krysten Ritter said to TVLine:

“Do I think I’ll play her again? I don’t think so. I feel like I’ve played her, you know? I feel really good about it. I feel good about closing the door.”

And series creator, Melissa Rosenberg also spoke about returning:

“I feel like this is a really complete, closed chapter.  I mean, never say never. But I feel ready to tell all new stories.”

While promoting the show, she also said:

“All three seasons are very much of a piece, each like a chapter of Jessica’s life.”

“We had the opportunity to really resolve this chapter of her life and all the characters.”

Rosenberg also added that the cast and crew feel they are “going out on a high” and said:

“It feels very complete to me now. I didn’t plan for that, or anticipate it, but it has just naturally come to a close.”

This all sounds like the team behind the show have accepted the “Netflix” Marvel universe is finished and are moving on. However Marvel could still bring the Jessica Jones character back with a new series, though possibly with a new actress taking on the role, should Krysten Ritter decide not return.

The destination for a returning Jessica Jones would also be a factor, since Hulu’s Marvel shows are much more “adult” oriented, which could be a more natural fit for the a continuation of the Marvel Netflix shows , especially since the Disney+ Marvel shows will be more family focused.   But a complete reboot would make it easier to bring Jessica Jones and the other Defenders to Disney+

But for the time being, until that 2 year clause in the Netflix contract expires, we won’t hear anything officially from Marvel about the future.

Do you think Jessica Jones will return?
