Over the past few years, there have been reports that Disney is developing a “Freaky Friday” sequel, with both Jamie Lee Curtis  and Lindsay Lohan talking openly at many events about the project in an effort to drum up a social media response to prompt Disney into moving forward on the project.

Disney has made many different versions of the “Freaky Friday” story over the years. The story involves a mother and daughter who swap places and are forced to live each other’s lives.

During a recent appearance on the Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show, Lohan confirmed that a sequel is now in the works, though she didn’t go into too much detail.

“I won’t say that yet. I don’t want to say too much.  We are both excited. I’m gonna speak for Jamie.”

Lindsay wouldn’t give any details on when production is set to begin or when or how it will be released, ie either theatrically or straight to streaming.

Disney has made three versions of the classic story; it’s likely this sequel will mix things up a little with a much older body swap, with Jamie aged 65 and Lindsay at 37. This shifts the potential jokes from being a teenager to an older person.

The 2003 version pulled in over $160 million at the box office and is based on a comedic children’s novel written by Mary Rodgers, which was first published by Harper & Row in 1972.   Disney has adapted the book into several films over the years, (1977, 1995, 2003, and 2018), with three of the films currently available to stream on Disney+.

It’s been previously reported that Elyse Hollander has been writing the script for the sequel, but it’s likely this film might still be a while out from happening.
