Disney’s “Freaky Friday” Sequel Finds Its Director
Disney has made many different versions of the “Freaky Friday” story over the years, with the first film being released in 1976, which saw Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster play a mother and daughter who swap places and are forced to live with each other’s lives.
In 2003, Disney released a newer version of the movie, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, which was a big success and over the past few years, there have been reports that Disney is developing a “Freaky Friday” sequel, with both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan talking openly at many events about the project in an effort to drum up a social media response to prompt Disney into moving forward on the project.
Deadline has revealed that the project now has a director attached. Nisha Ganatra has previously directed “Late Night” and episodes of Hulu Originals, “Welcome To Chippendales” and “Future Man”.
Apparently, Disney is looking to start filming this coming summer in Los Angeles, and it is going to be produced by Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr.
It’s unclear if a new “Freaky Friday” film is going to be released as a Disney+ Original or if it will be released first in cinemas.
It’s been previously reported that Elyse Hollander has been writing the script for the sequel, but now it’s been reported that Jordan Weiss has written a script for the upcoming film.
Disney also recently made a musical version of the story for the Disney Channel, which was released in 2018 and there was another version made for television by Disney in 1995, but this new film would be a little different, since it would be a sequel and also retell the story from the point of view of two adults swapping places, but much older.
You can find the previous “Freaky Friday” films available to stream now on Disney+.
