Over the past few years, there have been many rumours that Disney is working on a sequel to its popular movie franchise, “The Princess Diaries.” The first film was released in 2001 and starred Anne Hathaway as Mia, a shy teen who discovers that she’s the princess of a small European state. To claim her right to the throne, she must groom herself and prove that she is indeed a princess.

The film went on to become a box office hit and a cult classic, which also resulted in a sequel being released a few years later in 2004.

During a recent interview with V, Anne Hathaway was asked about a potential Disney+ series, to which she replied:”

We’re in a good place. That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

Anne has been pretty vocal about wanting to return to “The Princess Diaries” franchise in multiple interviews over the past few years and has also said publicly she would do everything possible to get Julie Andrews back, though it’s expected the new project would see Anne’s character Mia as the Queen, since over twenty years have passed since the last film.

It was revealed in 2022 that Aadrita Mukerji, who had previously worked on “Reacher” and “Supergirl,” was writing a script.

And in that same interview, she was asked if would be a sequel to “Devil Wears Prada“, which is also now a Disney-owned film following its purchase of 20th Century Studios.

Probably not. We all love each other and if somebody could come up with a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to. But there’s a huge difference in the world now with technology, and one of the things about that particular story is it was about producing a physical object. Now with so much being digital, it would just be very different. Maybe me, Stanley, Emily, Meryl, Dave Frankel, Patricia Field…we should just all do something else together. That’d be fun.”

Disney is always looking to the past for its future hits, but it doesn’t look like Disney is ready to fully hit the button on making a follow-up to “The Princess Diaries”, but hopefully, we will get some official confirmation soon.  And in the meantime, you can find the previous two films available to stream now on Disney+.
