Disney has been developing a third “Princess Diaries” film for several years. The original film tells the story of teenager Mia Thermopolis, who is just surviving each school day, finds out some shocking news about the death of her long-absent father, and discovers that he was the prince of Genovia, making her a real-life princess. So begins a comical transformation towards poise and princess-ness, including a media storm, jealous schoolmates and a plot to take over her country.

Anna Hathaway, who played Mia in the first two films, has not officially signed for the new film, had has expressed interest in being part of a new “Princess Diaries” movie for some time. But she’s not the only actress looking to return to the franchise, as Sandra Oh has also expressed interest in returning in her role as Vice Principal Gupta.  Sandra Oh has previously starred in “Killing Eve” and “Grey’s Anatomy”.

During a recent interview with EW, Sandra said:

“I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world. I am ready for the Queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world.”

In the original film, Sandra’s character receives a call in her office about the Queen’s impending arrival after Mia’s royal identity is leaked to the press. During the interview, she was asked by her character, and that scene has remained so popular:

“I have no idea! I feel it’s like your generation that hit when you were all very young. I remember it was like 2015, I was walking down the street in Chicago, and there [was] a young person, who at that point in 2015, was not my usual demographic, which was like a college-aged, straight white guy. He passed me and then he ran back up to me and did the line: ‘Uh huh. Uh huh. Uh huh. The Queen is coming.’ “I was like, ‘Who is this 20-year-old frat boy?’ He was coming up to me doing that line.”

The upcoming film has been written by Aadrita Mukerji, who has previously worked on “Reacher” & “Supergirl”. And the new film is going to be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who also produced the two previous “Princess Diaries” films. Melissa Stack, who previously worked on the 2020 Disney+ feature Godmothered, will be executive producing the film. Hopefully, we get an update on the film soon.

While we wait for a third film, both “Princess Diaries” films are available on Disney+.
