“X-Men ’97” Executive Says Fans Will Have To Be Patient For Second Season
This past week, Disney released the season finale of Marvel Animations “X-Men ’97” on Disney+ around the world. The series revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.
Way before the first season of “X-Men ’97” arrived on Disney+, it had been revealed that the show had already been picked up for a second season, however, it might be a while until we see it released on Disney+, as recently Marvel’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum revealed to CB that Season 2 is currently in the animatic stage.
“It’s still an animatic phase. Animation takes so long to make as I’m sure you know. There was a great bit about this in Invincible Season 2. They just nailed it so hard, it is the greatest. And it takes a long time. Because the studio wants to see how successful the first season is before they greenlight the second season there’s a lag. We were lucky enough to get the greenlight before we aired so there’s maybe less of a lag. People are just going to have to be patient with us.
The animatic phase is still very much in the early stages of development, where its still in a rough sketch or storyboard format that serves as a blueprint for an animation.
The first season of “X-Men ’97”, along with the classic 90s animated series are also available to stream on Disney+ now.
Roger’s POV: It’s not a huge surprise to hear that the second season of “X-Men ’97” is a way off yet, since Disney does like to see how a show performs before giving it the full go ahead, but it’s still allowed the creatives to keep moving forward to speed the process up if the show was a hit. Judging on how “What If?” took over two years for the second season to arrive, I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a similar weight for another season of “X-Men ’97”.
