This past week, Disney released the season finale of the second season of the Disney+ Original series, “The Santa Clauses”, a series which is a continuation of the holiday classic “The Santa Clause”, where Tim Allen returns as Scott Calvin, aka Santa.

In the Disney+ series, Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realises that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole. With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.

In the second season, the Calvin family is back in the North Pole as Scott Calvin continues his role as Santa Claus after retirement plans were thwarted when he failed to find a worthy successor in season one. Now that Scott and his family have successfully saved Christmas, Scott turns his focus towards training his son Cal to eventually take over the “family business” as Santa Claus. However, a bit of North Pole magic brings an unexpected challenge to Scott’s plan.

When the first season finale was released last year, Disney quickly made an announcement that the show had been renewed for a second season. However, so far, Disney hasn’t confirmed if a third season will be happening. This could be down to the actors’ and writer’s strikes causing a backlog of issues that the studios need to deal with, especially with focusing on resuming production on shows and focusing on the most important scripted drama for this winter season.

It’s also been noticeable that the viewership for the second season has been much lower than it was for the first, with very little online chatter about the show and no big announcements by Disney about how successful it’s been.

This makes a third season, a little less likely, though Disney is still focusing on creating less original content, but higher quality content, ideally based on an established franchise, which “The Santa Clauses” fits into.

Recently, while promoting the show on Behind the Lens, the executive producer, Jason Winer, said:

“The show is a a giant hit for Disney+ a Season 3 feels… while it’s never a certainty, it feels like we got a good shot.”

Jason also spoke about how they added so many easter eggs into the Disney+ series, to help set up a potential third season.

“So, we literally bend over backwards to connect our series to the original movies, and create Easter eggs for the fans, and we have so many cameos though, and so many roles, frankly, that we would love to make, and hopefully we get to do a Season 3, and we can scratch all those itches for the fans.”

Another reason why Jason would like to do a third season, is that they would then have enough tracks to release a soundtrack.

“If we’re lucky enough to do a third season, we’ll have enough original tracks to really release a proper soundtrack for three seasons combined. You’ll be able to find these tracks out there in the world from this season, but my dream is to put it all together and really put out a soundtrack of these original songs.”

Both seasons of “The Santa Clauses”, along with the three movies are all available to stream on Disney+.
