Last week, Disney’s Onyx Collective released a brand-new original series, “The Other Black Girl”, on Disney’s streaming services around the world, including Hulu in the United States, Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world.

The new series, which is based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’ best-selling novel, tells the story of Nella, an editorial assistant, who is tired of being the only Black girl at her company, so she’s excited when Hazel is hired. But as Hazel’s star begins to rise, Nella spirals out and discovers something sinister is going on at the company.

The show stars Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Brittany Adebumola, Hunter Parrish, Bellamy Young, Eric McCormack, and Garcelle Beauvais.

Recently, the show’s executive producer, Rashida Jones, spoke with Variety to promote the show and was asked about a potential second season, to which she replied:

“We really hope to continue to explore the world and to see how far Nella is willing to go with her ‘fake’ persona in order to achieve her goals. She has a new set of goals, a new layer of code-switching, a further distance from her true self.  Is her ambition still going to be worth it? When you pretend to be someone else for so long, does that false version of you become the truest one? And for there to be a Season 2, hopefully the studios will come up with a fair deal and everyone will be compensated for their hard work.”

With this series being based on Zakiya’s first-ever book and with her being a writer on the series, it does leave opportunities to further the story to continue, especially since they slightly changed the ending of the show from the book, to allow for a potential second season.

As with all shows, the biggest reason why a show is brought back for further seasons is down to how many people watch it.   Unfortunately, due to the actor’s and writer’s strike, Disney wasn’t able to do much promotion for “The Other Black Girl”, which will have no doubt hurt the show’s debut.  But hopefully, enough people will check out the show, to enable a second season to happen.   However, with the ongoing writer’s strike, it might be a while until we hear if a second season is going to happen.

“The Other Black Girl” is out now on Hulu in the United States, Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world.
