Marvel Studios is currently going through some major creative changes following the lacklustre box office results and Disney+ viewership for the latest phase, which has seen several unannounced projects delayed or cancelled, in addition to many announced projects getting delayed or reworked.

Following the poor reception to “Thor: Love & Thunder”, many Marvel fans have questioned if Taika Waititi will return to direct a fifth instalment in the franchise.  While the director got lots of praise for his work on “Thor: Ragnarok”, the last film left many fans unhappy with the direction of Thor and the creative decisions that were made.

Even Thor actor Chris Hemsworth spoke out last year about how the last Thor film “just became too silly.”

While promoting his new Searchlight Pictures film, “Next Goal Wins”, during an interview with Business Insider, director Taika Waititi was asked about the social media talk about a fifth “Thor” film being in development and if he was going to be returning to direct the fifth Thor movie.

“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate. I know that I won’t be involved. I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for,”

Taika is working on many other projects, including an adaption of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s graphic novel “The Incal”.   He’s also been linked to an adaption of the popular Manga film, “Akira”, a Showtime limited series “The Auteur”, an adaption of “Flash Gordon” and a television adaptation of the Terry Gilliam film, “Time Bandits”.  He’s also working on a new Star Wars film, to which Taika has said that:

“It’s still marinating. I’ve been writing it.”

With so many projects on the go, it’s easy to see how Taika doesn’t have the time to take on another Marvel project.

“So that’s six, seven years gone.  I’d imagine another ‘Thor’ would be a lot sooner than that. But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris,”

Currently, a fifth “Thor” film hasn’t been announced, and with Marvel Studios slowing down how many projects they work on to improve the quality and combat superhero fatigue from audiences, it might be a while away, though Thor could easily pop up in another film, as he did in this year’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 3”, such as the upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars” film, especially since Thor is one of the few original Avengers still active.

And Taika is very open to Marvel getting another director for a future “Thor” film.

“I would never feel like they are cheating on me.  We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”

With Marvel looking to address many of the problems with the MCU, it’s unlikely Taika will be returning for another “Thor” film, but with so many projects on the go, I don’t think it sounds like he’s going to worry.
