Back in 2016, it was revealed that Disney was working with Imagine and Free Association to develop a new version of the classic 1980s film, “Splash”, in which Jillian Bell was set to star in the film.   Since then, we’ve heard nothing about this project until Deadline has just reported that Sarah Rothschild is going to be writing the script for the film.

In the original film, Tom Hanks stars as a workaholic who’s convinced he can’t fall in love…until he’s mysteriously rescued at sea by the mermaid of his dreams, who Darryl Hanna plays.    It was released in 1985 and was one of the first films released under Disney’s Touchstone label.  Rob Howard directed the film, and it was produced by Brian Grazer, who following the success of the film, went on to create Imagine, which is the team behind shows like “Willow”, “Genius” and “Under The Banner Of Heaven”.

Jillian Bell has previously starred in the Disney+ Original film, “Godmothered”, along with other films like “22 Jump Street” and the Hulu film, “The Drop”.

Sarah Rothschild has previously written the Netflix series, “The Sleepover”, and is also working on a modern-day take on “Working Girl” called “24/7”.   Marja-Lewis Ryan had originally written an earlier draft of the “Splash” remake.

The original “Splash” film is available to stream now on Disney+.
