Disney has recently reshuffled its theatrical release schedule, revealing that the seventh instalment in the “Alien” franchise will be released in cinemas on August 16th 2024. The new film has previously gone by the working title of “Alien: Romulus” and was filmed in Budapest, Hungary earlier this year.

This new Alien film has been directed by Fede Alvarez, who has previously directed “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead”. Fede has also co-written the film with his longtime collaborator Rodo Sayagues. No plot details have yet been revealed about the new Alien film.

It will also be produced by the original “Alien” director, Ridley Scott and will star Cailee Spaeny, who has previously appeared in the “Mare of Easttown”. Also starring in the film will be Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.

The new untitled Alien film was originally reported to be released directly onto Disney’s streaming services (Hulu/Star+/Disney+) but now Disney is refocusing its efforts on profitability, which means more films are going to cinemas first, rather than straight to streaming. And no doubt, following the huge success of the “Predator” prequel, “Prey” last summer, it has given the studio more confidence in the Alien film. And we should expect to see the new Alien film added onto Disney’s streaming services in late 2024.

This isn’t the only Alien project in development at Disney, as FX is creating a new series that is set on Earth and wouldn’t be connected to Ripley’s story.

While we wait for the new Alien film, you can watch the previous Alien films on Starz in the US and on Disney+ in many countries around the world now.
