“National Treasure 3” Writer Treating Disney+ Show As Canon
Ever since the return of the “National Treasure” franchise with the Disney+ Original series, “Edge Of History”, there has been many questions about a potential third film, which has been in development limbo since 2008.
Multiple writers have been attached to the project, and Jerry Bruckheimer often gives little updates during interviews whenever asked if a third movie is still happening. Nicholas Cage has also previously said he had no interest in returning for a third instalment in the franchise.
While the new Disney+ series did get some fans, not enough people watched it to justify Disney giving it a second season, and it was cancelled after one season.
Recently, while speaking on the National Treasure Hunt Podcast, Ted Elliott, the screenwriter who is currently working on the script for the long-awaited “National Treasure 3” provided an update on the long-awaited project.
During the interview, Elliot confirmed that he began working on the third “National Treasure” film about a year ago and has written a complete draft, which is now ready for revisions from executives and studios.
The story of the third film will include some “familiar faces”, in addition to the main characters Ben, Riley, Abigail, and Ben’s parents. The new film will also apparently have a heist, which is the “weirdest ever,” when compared to stealing the Declaration of Independence and kidnapping the President.
Also, during the interview, Ted confirmed that he is treating the Disney+ Original series, “Edge Of History” as canon, so the recurring character, FBI Agent Sadusky, who was played by Harvey Keitel and was killed off in the show, will remain dead.
It is important to note that a third “National Treasure” film is still in the development stages and might not necessarily come to anything, but it’s interesting to see work is still ongoing on this franchise.
