“Moana 2” Becomes Smash Hit On Disney+
Last week, Disney released its billion-dollar box office smash hit movie, “Moana 2”, onto Disney+ around the world and as you might expect, it has been a huge hit for the streaming service.
Disney has announced that within the first five days of streaming on Disney+, “Moana 2” pulled in 27.3 million views globally. Making it the biggest Walt Disney Animation Studios premiere since Encanto (2021) and the third-largest animated theatrical premiere of all time on Disney+.
“Moana 2” reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that “Moana 2” has been a massive success on Disney+. The original “Moana” has now surpassed 1.4 billion hours streamed on Disney+—that’s like streaming the film over 735 million times or playing “How Far I’ll Go” on repeat for more than 50,000 years.
In the lead-up to “Moana 2”, 2024 marked “Moana’s” most-streamed year ever* and it’s been the most streamed film on Disney+ since the platform’s debut in 2019.
The movie has been directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino. The film features music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.”
Roger’s Take: “Moana 2” is going to continue to pull in millions, likely billions of hours of viewership on Disney+ in the years ahead, as this franchise continues to grow in popularity, especially with a new live-action reimagining movie coming out in a few years.
