Anne Hathaway Gives An Update On Disney’s “The Princess Diaries 3”
It’s been over four years since it was revealed that Disney was working on a third instalment in the “Princess Diaries” franchise.
The original film was released back in 2001 and was followed a few years later with “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. It told the story of teenager Mia Thermopolis, who gets some shocking news about the death of her long-absent father, where she then discovers that he was the prince of Genovia, making her a real-life princess. So begins a comical transformation towards poise and princess-ness, including a media storm, jealous schoolmates and a plot to take over her country.
During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s “Radio Andy. to promote her latest film, “The Odyssey”, Anne Hathaway gave an update on the upcoming Disney film, “The Princess Diaries 3”.
“I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make ‘Princess Diaries 3,’ I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
“The Princess Diaries 3” will be directed by Adele Lim, who previously worked on “Crazy Rich Asians,” and “Raya and the Last Dragon”.
Unfortunately, this new film is still very much in the early stages, so no other cast have been revealed, nor when it potentially might begin filming or get released, either in cinemas first or on Disney+ first.
While we wait, both “The Princess Diaries” films are available to stream now on Disney+.
Roger’s Take: It’s unfortunate that this news has come out and I suspect this delay is going to add on a couple of years to the development process, as Anne will no doubt schedule other projects to film, plus taking some time out to have her third baby. Ultimately, the script has to be great and anything less than that isn’t good for fans of the franchise.
