Last year, Marvel Studios launched a brand new format for Disney+, the Special Presentation, which resulted in “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Holiday Special” and “Werewolf By Night”.  This format offers Marvel an opportunity to tell a shorter story, that doesn’t warrant a full-blown series, nor a full theatrical release, meaning the budget can be much smaller.

There have been lots of rumours about potential one-off specials over the past year, with “Silver Surfer”, “Nova”, “Okoye”, “Man-Thing”, and many more being speculated on.

The latest rumour from the Above The Line’s Jeff Sneider, who claimed on The Hot Mic podcast that a new Special Presentation is being filmed right now, featuring Mephisto, who is going to be played by Sacha Baron Cohen, who has previously starred in films such as “Borat” and “Bruno”.   The character is apparently going to be debuting in the upcoming Disney+ series, “Agatha: Coven Of Chaos”, which is also filming now and will see

Filming two projects at the same time will drastically cut the budget required for the special and also allow for Sacha Baron Cohen’s scheduling to be easier to manage.    Also, with a Special Presentation basically being not much beyond a single episode of a Marvel show, it is possible, that Disney could turn it around much quicker and potentially get it out for this year’s Halloween season.

With all of the internet excitement during the release of “WandaVision”, where Marvel fans speculated that “Mephisto” was going to be the main character behind everything, it’s not s huge surprise to see Marvel taking notice and wanting to introduce the character to a larger audience.

Officially, nothing has been confirmed by Marvel, and since we didn’t hear about the “Werewolf By Night” special until the D23 Expo, just weeks before it was released on Disney+, we might not hear about it for a while, possibly at the San Diego Comic-Con, should Marvel do a panel presentation at the event.

While Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said they will be scaling back its releases over the next few years, Special Presentations offer a unique situation to provide Marvel fans with a small chunk-sized piece of the MCU, without the huge costs of a series or film.
