Disney has released the first trailer for the upcoming “What If…? – An Immersive Story”, which is being released exclusively on the Apple Vision Pro on May 30th 2024.  This one-hour experience will be available as a separate app.

This brand-new film lets viewers dive into an immersive, narrative-driven and innovative story in mixed reality, where the Multiverse is in danger, and The Watcher needs your help. Dangerous variants are hunting Infinity Stones and altering the fate of not only their realities, but yours as well. To save the fate of the Multiverse, you’ll need to use your own hands to learn mystic spells, defend your allies in epic battles, and more. But, be careful… everything might not be all that it seems.

The special is based on Marvel Studios’ critically acclaimed Disney+ Original animated series “What If…?”.  This first-of-its-kind immersive story brings new and iconic worlds from the What If…? universe right to your living room. With The Watcher as your guide, you’ll be seamlessly transported between mixed and virtual reality through the spatial computing capabilities of Apple Vision Pro, such as eye and hand tracking, spatial audio, and breathtaking visuals. As you embark on your journey, you’ll be reminded that time, space, and reality are more than a linear path.

Check out the trailer below:

“What If…? – An Immersive Story” is directed by Dave Bushore at Marvel Studios and produced by Shereif M. Fattouh at ILM Immersive.

The experience has been written by David Dong and Phil McCarty (“The Learning Curve”), with music by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning composer Laura Karpman (“American Fiction,” “The Marvels”). “What If…? – An Immersive Story” is executive produced by Bushore, Fattouh, and Brad Winderbaum (“What If…?,” “X-Men ‘97”), with Bryan Andrews (“What If…?,” “Primal”) serving as consulting producer. Vicki Dobbs Beck, VP of immersive content at Lucasfilm and ILM Immersive, Mark S. Miller, VP of creative development and production at ILM Immersive, and Jamie Voris, EVP/Chief Technology Officer at The Walt Disney Studios, all serve as executive producers.

Roger’s Take:  I like the idea of “What If?” expanding into video games, since it feels like a natural fit for some crash randomness, but honestly, tieing this to the Apple Vision Pro is going to reduce its reach drastically had it also been out on other VR devices, I could potentially think about trying my hand at it, but the Apple Vision Pro is so expensive, I doubt many of us will ever get to experience it, which is a shame.  But as a tech demo, it looks rather cool, but also, in some ways a waste of money unless Apple’s paid Disney for it.
