Marvel To Overhaul “Daredevil: Born Again” Disney+ Series With New Writers & Directors
Earlier this summer, Marvel Studios started filming a brand new series for Disney+, called “Daredevil: Born Again”, but production was shut down following the actor’s strike.
The series was initially announced back at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, and it will see longtime rivals Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D Onofrio), who try to leave behind their darker alter-egos to serve the people of New York only to have their pasts catch up to them. In the first episode of the series, we are reintroduced to the world of Daredevil, who has previously starred in the Netflix series, along with the Disney+ series, “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law”. Also returning in the new series is Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, aka “The Punisher.”
According to Variety, the show is going to go through a huge creative overall and has let go of all the writers for the show, including Chris Ord and Matt Corman. Marvel is now looking for some brand new writers to revamp the series, and they’ve also released all of the directors who were going to direct the remaining episodes.
With the writer’s strike now over, a new team is being put together to overhaul the show, though filming can resume until the actor’s strike comes to a conclusion. Apparently, they will be trying to use some of the footage that they managed to film in New York earlier this year, but Marvel is looking to take the show in a new creative direction.
Apparently, the show was resembling more of a legal procedural that wasn’t anything like the Netflix show, which is known for its action and violence. The new show didn’t even have Daredevil show up in his costume until the fourth episode.
Marvel Studios has been suffering from superhero and franchise fatigue, following a huge push to create more specials and shows for Disney+, which has weakened the brand and resulted in a dip in quality. Disney wants Marvel Studios to refocus on creating less content and to improve the quality, while also reducing the amount of money it spends.
The show was originally supposed to be released on Disney+ in early 2024 and run for eighteen episodes, but with what seems to be a major creative restructuring, those plans look to be out of the window as they look to improve the show.
While it doesn’t sound great that Marvel is taking such a drastic step with the new show, it hopefully will result in a far better show for Daredevil fans to enjoy. This isn’t the first time a project has gone through major creative changes, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” also went through a huge creative shift during production, when executives weren’t happy with the results.
Hopefully, filming can resume on “Daredevil: Born Again” later this year, once the actor’s strike is resolved, but in the meantime, you can check out the “Daredevil” show on Disney+ now. And in the New Year, Disney+ will be releasing “Echo”, which will also feature both Daredevil and the Kingpin!
