Josh Gad Provides Update On “Honey I Shrunk The Kids” Sequel
A long time ago, it was revealed that Disney was developing a new instalment in the “Honey I Shrunk The Kids” franchise, which would star Rick Moranis as Wayne Szalinski and Josh Gad as his son, Nick, called “Shrunk”.
But it’s been a long time since we heard anything about the project, though recently, Josh Gad took to social media to provide a disappointing update on the film. Last week, Josh Gad teased something big was coming, leading many to speculate that this could be an update on “Shrunk” or even that he was cast as The Thing in the new Marvel “Fantastic Four” movie, though he later revealed he would be heading to Broadway to star in a new show. But now Josh has given a clear indication of the future of “Shrunk”,
A lot of u ask me what’s going on with this film. Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us. If you want it, let your local @disney know.
The original film was released in 1990 and told the story of a scientist, who tries his best to get his recent invention, a shrinking machine, to work. Things go awry when he accidentally shrinks his children and throws them along with the garbage.
The sequel, would have seen Nick still suffering from the trauma from the events in the films, where he is very protective of his kids, while his sister, went in the opposite way, choosing not to put down roots and instead revelling in the adventurous travelling lifestyle her magazine job affords her. Meanwhile, Wayne has been ticketing with his invention, trying to come up with a cure for his wife’s cancer, who sadly has now passed away, and because of this, he is disconnected from his children.
The film was going to be directed by Joe Johnston, who directed the original “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids”, along with “Captain America: The First Avenger”, “Nutcracker and the Four Realms”, “The Rocketeer” along with others . David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman were producing the film.
This is the latest project that Josh Gad has been involved with at Disney, that hasn’t come to anything, including a new Muppet show for Disney+, and a “Beauty and the Beast” prequel series was also cancelled before filming could start. While the project could still happen (and Josh’s online post will no doubt help), it does look like the film isn’t going ahead, as this would have been an expensive film to make with all the special effects.
Unfortunately, while “Shrunk” looks to have vanished, we can still watch the first three “Honey” movies are all available now to stream on Disney+.
