Is 20th Century Studios No Longer Making A “Clue” Movie?
Back in 2018, it was reported that 20th Century Studios was developing a new live-action film with Ryan Reynolds based on the classic Hasbro board game, “Clue”, which is also known internationally as “Cluedo”.
In the board game, players have to find out who’s responsible for murdering Mr. Boddy of Tudor Mansion in his own home. Players try to determine who did it, where they did it and how they did it.
With murder mystery films such as “Knives Out” and “Murder On The Orient Express” being big enough hits to warrant sequels, a new version of “Clue” could slot into that genre.
In 2019, it was revealed that Jason Bateman was in talks to direct and star in the movie, before eventually James Bobin was attached to direct the movie. In 2022, Oren Uziel, who had previously worked on “21 Jump Street” and “The Lost City”, was attached to the project as a writer. Prior to Oren joining the project, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had worked on the first draft of the movie.
This wouldn’t be the first time “Clue” has been turned into a movie, as Paramount Pictures released “Clue” in 1985, and it starred Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about this project, and recently, Jeff Sneider of The Insneider revealed that Hasbro has been shopping around the movie and television rights to the board game franchise to multiple studios.
This indicates that 20th Century Studios is no longer involved in the project since they’ve had the rights since before Disney purchased the company but haven’t been able to get the project moving. Between the merger of Disney and 20th Century Fox, the pandemic and last year’s Hollywood strikes, Hasbro has the rights back and is out shopping it around.
