FX Boss Gives Update On Fourth Season Of “The Bear”
Last month, FX released the third season of the hit series, “The Bear”, which is about food, family and the insanity of the grind. It’s a losing battle every day in the restaurant business, and as Carmy pushes himself harder than ever and demands excellence from his crew, they do their best to match his intensity. Their quest for culinary excellence propels them to new levels and stresses the bonds that hold the restaurant together.
Following the huge success of the first two seasons of “The Bear” and with the cast becoming very popular, with them working on many other projects and due to the Hollywood strikes, it was revealed that FX had planned to film the third and fourth seasons at the same time.
However, during the press tour for the third season, it was revealed that while FX was able to film some scenes for the upcoming fourth season, it wasn’t able to wrap up everything and will require the team to return at a later date.
During a recent interview with Variety, FX network boss John Landgraf gave an update on the upcoming fourth season:
We couldn’t bring it back sooner because of all of the film projects the actors are on right now. We started a show with a team of great actors. Now we have a show with a team of movie stars. They do have to go back for a chunk of production. And we actually haven’t seen all the scripts yet. We’ve seen most of them, but not all of them. I would say one of the things I just really like about “The Bear,” which is something I used to like about television, is the sense that things came back every year. When you loved something, when you had an experience with it, it was a part of the year that you looked forward to. Now, not only do you often only get a very short period of time with a show, because it’s not a network show with 22 episodes that airs over 30 weeks, but very few shows come back annually. So I’m actually incredibly proud and grateful to the team at “The Bear” that have dedicated themselves — despite of all the other hoopla they’ve been dealing with — to bring this thing back annually. I can’t say for sure, but my guess is it’ll come back the same time next year.
With the news that the third and fourth seasons would be filmed back to back, many have come to the conclusion that the show is likely to wrap up after the fourth season, since this is how FX handled the end of “Atlanta”. John Landgraf was also asked if the fourth season will be the final season of the hit comedy series:
We really don’t know. These decisions are really creative decisions. It was Sterlin Harjo who made a decision that “Rez Dogs” was a three-season series. And so it’s really Chris [Storer’s] decision on “The Bear.” It’s about, how much more story does he have to tell? I mean, obviously, I’m hoping he has more than one more season of story to tell. But not to the extent that if there was one great season or three mediocre ones, I’d rather have one great one. You just have to follow the creative.
Roger’s Take: I have really enjoyed watching “The Bear” and its easily one of the best shows on Disney+/Hulu right now, but there is also a limit to how far this show can go, especially as its stars have now been skyrocketed to major Hollywood players and the costs involved in bringing them back will likely make future seasons less likely.
All three seasons of “The Bear” are available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.
