Disney+ Licenses Multiple Paramount Movies Internationally
It’s the start of a brand new month, and Disney+ subscribers in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, have been treated to a wide selection of movies from Paramount, indicating that Disney has done a licensing deal with the studio.
These movies include titles such as “Mean Girls”, “Grease”, “Grease 2”, “Clueless” and “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days”.
This deal doesn’t look like it’s an exclusive licensing deal, as the films are also available on multiple other streaming platforms in each country, such as Paramount+.
Paramount is currently undergoing a merger with Skydance, as the company has been struggling financially and has indicated that it is making changes to its operations. Many other big studios, including Warner Brothers Discovery and Disney, have also been licensing out some legacy titles to other streaming services in non-exclusive deals for additional revenue.
Disney already has a licensing deal for selected legacy titles for Hulu in the United States, which means many films like “Meet The Fockers”, and “War Of the Worlds” are available to stream on Hulu On Disney+. Also, the “Indiana Jones” movies were recently made available again on Disney+ in the United States.
It’s unclear if we will see other Paramount-owned titles added to Disney+ internationally at a later date or if the deal was only for those titles.
Roger’s Take: As we see the streaming wars move into a different era, we are seeing some of the major studios give up on competing directly with major streaming platforms like Netflix and instead are returning to their licensing method that they’ve used for decades. The addition of licensed content onto Disney+ will provide more variety for subscribers and even if these titles are available for a limited time, offer something different to watch. However, it would be nice if Disney decided to take a look back at its own back catalogue for titles that aren’t available as well, to freshen up the selection of movies available.
