Disney Cancels “Extraordinary” After Two Seasons
With Disney drastically reducing the number of original series it creates to cut costs, this isn’t just hitting shows made in the United States, as it’s been revealed by Variety that the British Original superhero series “Extraordinary” has been cancelled after two seasons and won’t be returning for a third.
This series is set in a world where everyone over the age of 18 develops a superpower. Everyone except for 25-year-old Jen, who feels like she’s being left behind. Luckily, Jen’s flatmates – Carrie, Kash, and a mysterious stray – keep her from falling into a well of self-pity. Adrift in a big, confusing world, and armed with nothing but a bit of hope and a lot of desperation, Jen begins her journey to find her maybe-superpower. But in doing so, she might discover the joy of being just kind of ok.
The first season was released in January 2023 on Disney+ worldwide and on Hulu in the United States. The second season was released a year later. The first season of “Extraordinary” was also licensed to the British streaming service ITVX.
A Disney+ rep confirmed that the show won’t be returning:
“Disney+ Original series ‘Extraordinary’ will not be returning for a third season on the service. We’re so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran.”
The series stars Máiréad Tyers (Jen), Sofia Oxenham (Carrie), Bilal Hasna (Kash), Luke Rollason (Jizzlord), Siobhán McSweeney (Jen’s mum, Mary) and Robbie Gee (Jen’s stepdad, Ian).
“Extraordinary” is executive produced by Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris for Sid Gentle Films, the production company behind “Killing Eve” and Charles Dawson. The series is executive produced by Johanna Devereaux, Vice President of scripted Content for Disney+ and Emma Moran. Charlie Palmer and Abíólá Rufai-Awójídé produce the series.
Roger’s Take: This is a real shame, as “Extraordinary” is one of my favourite British Disney+ Original shows. Unfortunately, we will never know what happened after Jen fell into the void, which other people used as a local rubbish dump. I’m just hoping that Disney doesn’t do its typical thing with cancelled shows and removes them from their platforms since it’s a great quirky show that is a mix between “Derry Girls” and “The Boys.”
The chances of the show being cancelled have been high, especially as the second season renewal was announced just weeks after the first season premiered, and it’s taken a year for confirmation of the cancellation has taken a year.
