During the 2020 Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios announced a brand new series for Disney+ was being created called “Armor Wars”, which will see Don Cheadle return as War Machine, aka Colonel James Rhodes.

The series is going to be a reworking of the “Armor Wars” comic book story that was published in the Iron Man comics in 1987 and 1988.  The story is about what happens if Tony Stark’s Iron Man tech falls into the wrong hands?

While there haven’t been too many updates on the new Marvel project, recently, at the D23 Expo, Don Cheadle spoke about returning for the series.  Where he revealed that Rhodey fans will see the character in a whole new light, and considering the title of the series, audiences can look forward to all-new suits for the hero, featuring different types of armor.

However, according to THR, the Disney+ series is going through a major change. Instead of a six-episode series, it will now be released as a movie.    Marvel has confirmed that “Armor Wars” will be released theatrically.

Back at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios revealed the upcoming release window for phases five and six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  However, “Armor Wars” wasn’t included on the plan.

With the project being changed from a series to a film, it will push the project further down the development slate.  According to sources, the studio wants to get the story told in the right way, and during this process, they realised the project would work better as a film than as a Disney+ series.  Yassir Lester, is going to be remaining on the project to write the film.

Don Cheadle will be returning to the MCU in the next Disney+ series, “Secret Invasion”, which is coming to the streaming service in early 2023.

What do you think of “Armor Wars” becoming a film?
