Disney+ Original Marvel’s “Daredevil: Born Again” To End After Three Seasons
One of the cornerstones of Disney+ since its launch has been its original shows from Marvel Studios, which expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe with hit shows like “WandaVision”, “Loki” and “Moon Knight”.
However, not every Marvel show on Disney+ was a big enough hit with audiences to justify spending hundreds of millions of dollars on it and having too many projects on the go at once, resulting in Marvel’s attention to detail being distracted, quality reduced and many fans becoming worn out with superhero fatigue.
This resulted in a big shift at Marvel, with a reduction in the number of shows and films it was creating, along with a drastic cut in budgets. The days of $100+ million show budgets were gone, and new shows like “Wonder Man” and “Agatha All Along” had to be made on less than half of that.
Prior to the launch of Disney+, Marvel Television had success with the “Daredevil” series on Netflix, along with many spin-off shows like “The Punisher”, “Jessica Jones” and “The Defenders”. But these weren’t part of Marvel Studios’ lineup, so they were effectively “non-canon” to the MCU. The interest in these characters resulted in Marvel Studios bringing back Charlie Cox as Daredevil for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and Vincent D’Onofrio as the Kingpin for the “Hawkeye” Disney+ show.
The show also underwent creative changes: it was originally a slightly different multi-version of the same characters, but that decision was reversed to keep those original Netflix shows as part of the larger MCU and keep things simpler for audiences.
After the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again” released in 2025 and the second in 2026, a third season is set to hit Disney+ in 2027. We’ve also seen a spin-off special with “The Punisher” released on Disney+ this year, ahead of the character’s appearance in the biggest film of the year, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”
However, it looks like this might be the last of “Daredevil: Born Again”, as according to a report from THR, it looks like “Daredevil: Born Again” won’t be returning for a fourth season on Disney+.
Marvel hasn’t released official details on the cancellation, but the showrunner, Dario Scardapane, has parted ways with the studio, which is strange since the show is still in the final stages of post-production. I’d also expect Marvel to not confirm this information, since the third season won’t be released on Disney+ until March of next year.
It’s been very clear that Marvel has been drastically reducing the number of shows it’s making for Disney+, and no new shows after the third season of “Daredevil: Born Again” have been officially announced. However, THR states that Marvel is developing about five different shows for Disney+. It was also recently revealed that “Wonder Man” won’t return for a second season, despite previously being announced as renewed.
I fully expect Marvel to continue making animated shows like “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” and “X-Men ’97” for years to come, because they are much cheaper to produce and help fill the streaming service with original content for hardcore fans, while keeping the general audience heading to cinemas to see the big epic films like “Avengers: Doomsday”.
I’ve been saying for a while that we are likely to see Disney+ get far fewer original live-action shows from Marvel (and Star Wars), especially with the integration of Hulu, which will reduce the need for these big-budget shows.
Still, I fully expect to see characters like Daredevil, The Punisher, and others appear in new shows in the future, especially since they are street-level heroes that can be made on a smaller budget. “Daredevil: Born Again” might come to a close, but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t get a “Defenders” or a “Daredevil” show by another name in the future. Or even better, appearances in some of the upcoming movies.
All three seasons of “Daredevil” and the two seasons of “Daredevil: Born Again” are available to stream now on Disney+.
