Disney has acquired the first-window streaming rights for a new psychological thriller called “Rematch” for Disney+ in the United Kingdom.  Disney+ will also release the show in France after it airs on Arte, who commissioned the series.

Inspired by true events, “Rematch” is a psychological thriller, about the 1997 historic confrontation between Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player of all time, and IBM’s supercomputer, Deep Blue. Two brains, face to face. A man against an empire.  This human vs. machine battle will forever change the perception of artificial intelligence.

Warner Brother Discovery’s HBO Europe has acquired the series for Spain, Portugal, the Nordics, Iceland, the Baltics, Central Europe, Greece and the Netherlands.

“Rematch” consists of six episodes, and it has been directed by Yan England, who has previously worked on “The Red Band Society”.   The show has been written by André Gulluni & Yan England, who have previously worked on “Sam”.

The show stars Christian Cooke (The Promise), Sarah Bolger (The Tudors), Tom Austen (The Royals), Trine Dyrholm (The Legacy), Aidan Quinn (Elementary), Luke Pascalino (Skins),  and Orion Lee (First Cow).

It has been created by Unité (Bruno Nahon) and ARTE France, with Federation Entertainment handling the distribution for the show.

This is the latest licensed European show for Disney+ in the UK, which is required to have a certain amount of films and shows made in Europe.   It’s a nice little addition and it’ll be interesting to see if there is much interest in this French series when it eventually arrives on Disney+, though no release date has been announced for when “Rematch” will be released on Disney+ in the UK.
