Disney+ Adds New Hulu Themed Profile Avatars
Ever since Disney+ first introduced general entertainment shows from the companies’ more mature studios like 20th Century Fox, FX and ABC, many subscribers have wanted the streaming app to feature profile avatars featuring characters from their favourite shows like “Family Guy”.
It’s been over five years since the Star hub was introduced in many countries around the world, making shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Paradise”, exclusive to Disney+, before eventually rebranding to Hulu last year for a more consistent global brand.
But due to the constraints of Hulu and Disney+ being two separate platforms in the United States, we haven’t seen more mature characters available as profile avatars within Disney+, until now.
This week, Disney Bundled Subscribers in the United States will be able to link their Hulu and Disney+ profiles together, bringing their Hulu watch history, watchlist, and recommendations into Disney+.
To go along with that, Hulu subscribers within Disney+ will be able to select from a new selection of profile avatar’s based on popular Hulu shows.
While we don’t know exactly how many different Hulu-themed profile avatars there will be, the initial preview shows characters from popular shows and films, including:
- Bob’s Burgers
- Family Guy
- Futurama
- Handmaid’s Tale
- Grey’s Anatomy
- Paradise
- Alien: Earth
- Only Murders In The Building
- The Bear
- The Rookie
Currently, these new Hulu-themed profile avatars are only available in the US, but I suspect these will roll out globally at some point in the future, since these shows are generally all available on Disney+ internationally, and the system is now updated to handle Hulu avatars.
You can choose your profile avatar by going into the Profile settings within Disney+, but just note that the rollout of these new avatars is currently underway in the United States only for bundled subscribers.
Personally, I currently have Wolverine set as my profile avatar, but that’ll be changing to either Peter or Stewie from “Family Guy”, once they become available globally. It’s just a shame it’s taken over five years since the introduction of general entertainment to finally get to this point, highlighting that the merger of Hulu into Disney+ has been a long time coming and still has plenty more steps to take before being finalised.
