Ever since Bob Iger returned to Walt Disney as CEO in late 2022, he’s gone on a major cost-cutting exercise to bring the company back under control, especially with regard to Marvel Studios, which had an explosion of new films and shows being created to boost Disney+ subscribers.

Originally, in 2023, Marvel had plans to release over five live-action Marvel shows on Disney+, in addition to multiple films and animated shows, but Bob Iger hit the pause button when audiences began tuning out of Disney+ shows and stopped going to the cinema, due to many issues, such as superhero fatigue and also a drop in quality with Marvel churning out too much content.

During the latest quarterly financial investors call, Bob Iger confirmed that Marvel Studios is pulling back on its content schedule, with fewer releases. He also confirmed that they are planning on two Marvel Disney+ shows a year, in addition to two or maybe three movies.

In 2025, Marvel currently has four movies scheduled to be released, including “Captain America: Brave New World”, “Thunderbolts”, and “The Fantastic Four”. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Blade” is bumped back or removed from the 2025 slate. It’s likely we will see “Wonder Man” and “Daredevil: Born Again” released on Disney+ in 2025.

Roger’s POV:  This lighter release schedule for Marvel will hopefully help continue to pull audiences into Disney+ and cinemas, without becoming burnt out.   The schedule that Disney had for Marvel in 2022/23 was just too much for audiences, as constant Marvel releases were hurting the brand, especially since the quality of these shows and films had dipped.  Marvel was picking more obscure characters to showcase, which have felt disconnected from the core Avengers films.  I think less is sometimes more and I think this new balanced approach is the right thing to do.
