Earlier this month, it was revealed that Ryan Murphy was developing a new “9-1-1” spin-off series following the huge success of the main show’s move from FOX to ABC and the spin-off series, “9-1-1: Lonestar,” which is coming to a close after five seasons.

Very little is known about the upcoming new spin-off series, though Ryan Murphy did hint that he was making a new series:

“Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall.  Sadly, we all love ‘Lone Star,’ but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it. So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And ‘9-1-1’ moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Initially, the show was rumoured to be heading to Las Vegas, but according to Deadline, the new spin-off show could be heading to Hawaii.   The main “9-1-1” show takes place in Los Angeles, and the spin-off, “9-1-1: Lonestar”, takes place in Austin, Texas.

Filming a new series in Hawaii can be problematic, as it increases the cost of production, but Disney will likely want to make sure this new version stands out visually. We’ve seen plenty of other hit shows set in Hawaii, like “Rescue: HI-Surf,” “Doogie Kamealoha MD,”  and “Hawaii-Five-O.”

Both “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lonestar” are created and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, with Minear also acting as the showrunner. Both Tim and Ryan have been discussing the new show, which is expected to hit our screens next year with scripts currently being written.

Roger’s Take:  I think either Las Vegas or Hawaii would be a great setting for a new spin-off series to make it feel a little different visually from the main show, but also allow for some different storylines and settings, that might not be possible in Austin or Los Angeles.  I suspect we won’t hear too much more about this show until “Lonestar” has fully wrapped up.

You can catch both “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lonestar” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
