Following the huge success in the hit drama series, “9-1-1” jumping from FOX to ABC last year, Disney is once again looking to Ryan Murphy to create a brand new drama series.

While the spin-off series “9-1-1: Lonestar” is set to end after five seasons, a new spin-off series is now in development.

Very little is known about the new spin-off yet, but it is expected to move to a brand new location, possibly Las Vegas. The core “9-1-1” series takes place in Los Angeles, while the “Lonestar” spin-off takes place in Austin, Texas.

Both “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lonestar” are created and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, with Minear also acting as the showrunner. Both Tim and Ryan have been discussing the new show, which is expected to hit our screens next year with scripts currently being written.

Ryan explained to Variety.

“Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall.  Sadly, we all love ‘Lone Star,’ but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it. So now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And ‘9-1-1’ moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Ryan Murphy is extremely busy creating new shows for 20th Television, where he has an overall deal. Currently, he has a number of different shows being released weekly across Disney’s platforms, including Hulu and Disney+, including “Doctor Odyessy”, “American Sports Story”, “American Horror Stories”, “Grotesquerie” and “9-1-1”.

Roger’s Take:  The “9-1-1” formula works well, especially for ABC, and with “Lonestar” wrapping up, it could be a great way of continuing the franchise.  With a fresh cast and a brand-new location, it should feel different enough, yet also familiar.  I also wouldn’t be surprised if one of two cast members from the other shows make a leap or at least a guest performance to get the show off the ground.
