To tie in with World AIDS Day, a brand new documentary short called “Unexpected” is going to premiere on Hulu on December 1st 2023.

Follows Masonia Traylor and Cici Covin as they produce self-care packages for pregnant women recently diagnosed with HIV and offer them to be part of a safe network of support and services.  The film highlights an underground network of women helping women cope with and survive an HIV diagnosis in the rural South. Women are dealing with intense stigma, a broken healthcare system, discrimination and the only solution is a connection through shared experience.

“Unexpected” was produced by Sheryl Lee Ralph, who stars in the hit series, “Abbott Elementary” and is directed by Zeberiah Newman, who has previously worked as a producer on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”

The documentary premiered at the 2023 Essence Film Festival earlier this year and has been going through the film festival circuit, with screenings at SCAD Savannah Film Festival, DC Black Film Festival, Black Women Film Network, Detroit Black Film Festival, The Women’s Film Festival and Cleveland Film Festival.

“Unexpected” has won an Award of Excellence at both The Accolade Global Film Competition and The IMPACT Docs Awards, and was a Silver Winner at the Telly Awards.

ABC will also be broadcasting this year’s “Divas Simply Singing: Raising Health Awareness” benefit concert on the same day.  The one-hour special includes performances by Sheryl Lee Ralph, Anthony Hamilton, Dianne Reeves, Amber Riley and Saycon Sengbloh, along with appearances by Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson, Tatyana Ali, Kalen Allen, William Stanford Davis, Brandee Evans, Sherri Shepherd, Robin Thede and Lisa Ann Walter.

Tina Knowles and U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee were honoured during the event, which was filmed before a live audience at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

DIVA Foundation executive director Norman Lee said in a statement to Variety:

“Our relationship with ABC-owned television stations and Hulu is a very important one because of our combined desire to amplify stories around health disparities, especially those affecting women in vulnerable communities,”
