“The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” is back this week with two new shorts on Disney+. In “Houseghosts,” town residents get rid of a house that is haunted by ghosts. When Mickey sees they are homeless, he wants to help and lets them live at his house. They end up taking over his house and making it look haunted as well. That’s when Minnie reminds him that he’s “too sweet” and he uses that power for good to drive the ghosts away.

This is an excellent episode that really demonstrates what so many generations have loved about Mickey Mouse. While early shorts show Mickey having a bit of an edge, modern Mickey is one of the most wholesome characters in existence, and his never wanting to see anyone without illustrates that wholesomeness perfectly. Even though he knows the ghosts are bad for him and his home, he can’t bear to see anyone even appear like they are mistreated. It’s an admirable quality, but one that allows for so many people to be taken advantage of. And, despite his experience, he doesn’t change. After driving away the ghosts by being himself, he ends up seeing a family of what looks to be rabid raccoons who lose their home when a tree is cut down. He still feels the need to give them a home because they are now homeless just like the ghosts were before.

This episode doesn’t feature most of the rest of the Mickey and Friends crew and that’s a little disappointing. While I’m not a fan of the way this series of short animates Goofy, his friends are still a wonderful part of his story that can heighten my enjoyment of the majority of shorts. At the very least, I would’ve liked to see how the ghosts interactions with Pluto. Minnie’s appearance is welcome as she is the one who helps him realize he can drive away the ghosts without being cruel and throwing them out. I just would’ve liked more appearances from his friends.

I’m very excited this series of shorts is back as it was one of my favorites towards the end of 2020 and I love seeing the mouse that started the Disney empire as often as I can. He’s one of, if not, my favorite Disney character, and seeing him is always a treat for me. This episode was one of the funnier ones and I hope other viewers enjoy this one as much as I did.
