The Mighty Ducks are getting used to new teammates while Evan is learning how to play on team Dominate in the latest episode of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.” Evan is hustling and showing all of the determination Coach Cole wants to see from his team. But Alex is leading the Mighty Ducks to just have fun while taking part in the summer camp. It comes to a head when Coach Cole schedules a practice during Nick’s birthday party, and Evan is late while trying to get out of the practice.

Evan is learning he has to make smarter decisions while also deciding what sacrifices he has to make. He plans to tell Coach Cole he’s sick so he can get to the party, but that’s spoiled when his mother tries to get his coach to let him out of the practice, so Coach Cole knows he’s lying. In the end, when Evan must decide to stay and practice or get benched for the first game to attend his friend’s party, he decides to get bench and go the party. Most of the party has been ruined because Nick wouldn’t allow the party to start until Evan arrived, but Alex saves the day with an idea she actually got from Coach Cole.

This season seems to be headed for an obvious matchup between Team Dominate and the Mighty Ducks. I’m curious to see how that will work out, but I get the feeling that no matter the outcome, it’s going to be disappointing. While Alex’s idea that youth hockey should be about fun is correct in the pee-wee league, it doesn’t hold up in a scenario where everyone is at a camp to be the best. In this setting, Coach Cole’s method is better than Alex’s method. If we get Team Dominate vs. The Mighty Ducks in the final, it would be predictable from a storytelling perspective, but any other outcome stops the show from continuing. If Team Dominate wins, it’s predictable. If the Mighty Ducks win, it’s unbelievable. They seem to be painting themselves into a no-win situation.

This show isn’t bad, but it is rather bland. This season is weaker than last season even though they are clearly working hard to try to make it good. I hope they find a way to make the storyline more interesting, but my hopes aren’t high for that one. It just keeps coming up short.
