One of the most popular franchises Pixar has created is “Cars”, which has spawned three animated films, along with two spin-off films and a Disney+ series.

“Cars” is about Lightning McQueen, a racing car, who has to learn a hard lesson in life when he damages a lot of property in Radiator Springs, and he is tasked with having to repair the damage done before he can get back on the road.

While the films haven’t been the biggest box office draws in Pixar’s history, they are hugely popular and, most importantly to Disney, sells lots of merchandise.  The franchise is so popular that an entire land is dedicated to it at Disney California Adventure theme park.

With the return of Bob Iger as CEO, he has been focused on rebuilding Pixar and has already announced that they are working on a fifth “Toy Story” movie, but now we can add a possible “Cars” project into the mix.

During a recent appearance on “The Late Brake Show”, Jay Ward, who co-created the Disney Pixar Cars characters, was asked about the future of “Cars”, to which he replied:

“There are more Cars things brewing, I can’t say much more yet. Cars has got a life that will keep going. I am working on some real fun projects right now that you will see in a couple of years. It takes us a while to make them.”

It should come as no surprise that Pixar is working on more projects involving “Cars”.  This could be a fourth movie or a follow-up to the Disney+ series, “Cars On The Road”.

It’s been over five years since “Cars 3” was released in cinemas and even back then the creators were open to creating another film, with “Cars” producers Kevin Reher and Andrea Warren saying to CinemaBlend that:

“If there’s a good story to tell I mean our heads kinda break after having gotten this one done, like oh my god what could you do the further adventures of?   But like any sequel, from Toy Story 4 to Incredibles, as long as there’s a good story to tell it’s worth investing, we do love these characters, we love them as much as the public does.”

It might be a while until we get an update on what’s next for the “Cars” franchise but there should be little doubt that Disney doesn’t tend to leave profitable franchises alone and while they’ve got “Inside Out 2”, “Elio” and “Toy Story 5” already announced, it might be a while until we see a new film.

In the meantime, you can watch the previous “Cars” films, along with the original short series, “Cars On The Road” on Disney+ now.
