After years in development, Disney is once again trying to get a new Tron sequel made, as according to Deadline, Garth Davis is going to direct the original film.

Garth has previously directed “Lion”, which was nominated for six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture, though Tron would be his first big tent pole movie. The director had been aggressively pushing for the job and was able to win over the Walt Disney Studios executives.

The third film in the franchise is set to star Jared Leto, who is also producing the film, along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook. Jesse Wigutow is onboard the project as the writer of the film.

Tron 3 hasn’t yet been officially greenlighted by Disney, but is in early development. The film isn’t going to be a direct sequel to Tron Legacy.

It isn’t yet known if the Tron sequel would be released in cinemas first or directly onto Disney+.

Disney is still actively pushing the Tron franchise, as the company is currently constructing a brand new roller coaster at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, which is a copy of the Tron Lightcycle Power coaster found in Shanghai Disney Resort.

Tron, Tron Legacy and the animated series, Tron: Uprising are all available now on Disney+.
